Intro

The elite-level rivalry makes its return for the first time in more than 25 years. The last AFL State of Origin match was played in 1999, when Victoria faced South Australia at the MCG, while the last time Western Australia and Victoria met in this format was in 1992.

The match will kick off at 4:40pm AWST, with a range of events and activations taking place in the lead-up, celebrating the rich history of WA football and bringing the community together across the State.

AFL Origin activations and events

A number of cultural institutions and venues are marking the occasion:

  • WA Museum Boola Bardip – AFL Origin: The Beginning — the Museum is showcasing iconic memorabilia from the 1977 State of Origin, reflecting on the history and significance of the competition.
  • State Library of Western Australia – Polly Farmer: Origins of an Icon — a special display celebrating the life and legacy of AFL legend Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer, featuring historic film footage, medals, original guernseys and photographs spanning his decorated career.
  • AFL Origin Hunt — fans can take part in an interactive digital experience by collecting stamps at key Perth locations using an online map, with participants going into the draw to win $10,000 cash and a dream Perth weekend prize.
  • AFL Origin Footy Fest  — a free, family-friendly event at Optus Stadium’s Stadium Park featuring live performances from WA artists, AFL PLAY Zone activities, roving entertainment and more.
  • Open training sessions — supporters can attend open training at Optus Stadium on Friday 13 January, with Victoria training from 3:30pm and Western Australia from 4:40pm.

Celebrations will take place across the entire state, including players’ hometowns, with regional community groups, sporting clubs and hospitality venues joining in the festivities with AFL Origin branding and live match broadcasts, including a pop-up screen at the Subiaco Night Markets, the Yagan Square digital tower, and the Footy Fest big screen.

The WA Government is proud to bring AFL Origin to WA as we celebrate our storied football history and showcase the strength of the game across the community.
