Each year, International Women’s Day provides us with an opportunity to recognise and celebrate all women and the contributions they make to our communities.

International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the gains we have made toward gender equality — and recognise that major change is still required.

This year’s theme, Balance the Scales, reminds us that equality is not about advantage for some; it’s about dignity, safety and fairness for all.

As a department, CITS supports a range of organisations, events, activations, and awareness activities that champion women’s achievements and spotlight the importance of gender equity across our sectors.

Throughout the month of March, the  Power Her Play initiative celebrates the passion, strength and leadership of women in sport across Western Australia.

This includes the AFC Women’s Asia Cup where you can cheer on the Matildas or the other amazing women competing. There’s also the  Women’s Test Match which will see Australia take on India at the WACA.In the Creative Industries portfolio, The Blue Room Theatre illuminates female voices from communities and cultures across the globe in a production titled  A Montage of Women. This sold out event highlights that the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap report estimates it would take (five generations) to close the global gender gap, projecting that gender parity might not be achieved until 2133. A stark reminder!

The Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) is hosting a talk with curator Anna Kristensen about exhibitions Oui Move in You and In Her Footsteps: A tribute to matrilineal legacy.

There are plenty of other ways to get involved. Find out more about International Women’s Day on the Department of Communities’ website.
