Guided by Sarah Wilson from the Hike Collective, participants stepped into the ecological and historical significance of FR Berry Reserve — 214 hectares of Jarrah, Marri and Wandoo woodlands, granite outcrops, wildflowers, and native wildlife.

Throughout the hike, 11-year-old Mackenzie was elevated in discussions from flora identification to conservation and land management.

Supported via a $25,000 WA Government Hiking Participation grant to Destination Perth, this funding set a path for 350 participants across 20 guided hikes, catering for all skill and age brackets.

The hike’s success was supported by several key factors, including active parental engagement and presence of a skilled and relatable guide.

The experience reaffirmed the importance of promoting guided hikes as safe, inclusive and educational, particularly for families seeking alternative learning opportunities.
