Surfing WA’s Indigenous Leadership Program, in partnership with local surf schools and Elders, provides surfing sessions alongside cultural workshops.

For local coach Ella Ginbey, the program’s success, funded through the WA Government’s Inclusive Participation Grant Program is down to its place-based approach.

“As a local in the Peel region, I find it very important to get the students of the area involved in our local environments,” she said.

“It’s fulfilling being able to introduce students into an environment we are so comfortable in and share with them the joy  that comes from this amazing sport.”

Following success at Coodanup College in Mandurah, the program has swelled to include Pinjarra Senior High School.

Through guided surf sessions, cultural exchange and mentorship, participants are developing resilience, teamwork and leadership skills.

Students learn practical ocean skills while deepening their understanding of culture, history and connection to place, helping strengthen wellbeing both in and out of the water.

“The impact this program has on the students' day is enormous,” Ms Ginbey said.

“There is no shortage of smiles and laughter after every session, which is without a doubt the best part of the class.”

The Sport and Recreation Inclusive Participation Program provides funding to help organisations create inclusive, accessible, safe and welcoming sport and recreation opportunities for people from low participation groups across WA by reducing barriers and supporting participation for all.

The program supports projects ranging from research and pilots to community-based and Statewide initiatives that build skills, strengthen partnerships and help more people get involved in sport and recreation.
