Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program

Providing financial support to assist sport and active recreation organisations to plan, secure and deliver sport and mass participation events in Western Australia.

The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport's (CITS) vision is to make Western Australia a world-class arts, cultural, sport and Aboriginal tourist destination. CITS aims to continue to increase the number of people visiting Western Australia from interstate and overseas so they can experience our unique arts, cultural, sport and Aboriginal attractions.

A diverse sport and recreation events calendar will attract more sports fans and sporting teams to Western Australia and maximise our opportunities to grow our sport and active recreation events. This will enable us to help create more jobs and more vibrant urban and regional communities, boost the economy and enhance Western Australia’s reputation as a major sport and active recreation tourism destination.

Eligibility

The following organisations are eligible to apply: 

  • recognised national sporting organisations (NSOs) and organisations for people with disability (NSODs)
  • CITS recognised State sporting associations (SSAs), State active recreation organisations (SAROs) and peak bodies
  • local government authorities (LGAs)
  • regional and local sport and active recreation clubs and associations, affiliated with a recognised governing body
  • community sport and active recreation organisations.

In addition, to be eligible for funding organisations must: 

  • be incorporated under the Associations Incorporations Act 2015 (WA) or a company limited by guarantee under the Corporations Act 2001 (Commonwealth) or a registered local government entity in Western Australia
  • possess an Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • maintain appropriate and sufficient insurance cover for the duration of the grant period. Please note, for Public Liability Insurance, a minimum value of $10 million per claim or occurrence giving rise to a claim is required.

In addition, the following will apply: 

  • Provide written evidence that the relevant state, national or international body is supportive of the event being conducted in WA and confirming that the event is the pinnacle event for the sport, age group or discipline. For mass participation events, a letter of support is still recommended. This may be provided by the governing body of the activity or the local government where the event is taking place. 
  • Organisations with outstanding acquittals for any CITS grant may have payments withheld until outstanding acquittal documentation is satisfactorily completed.

Please note that the guidelines have recently been updated, and review the changes carefully before applying.

  • event delivery period has increased from 6 months to 12 months
  • minimum amount available to apply for is now $10,000
  • maximum amount available for mass participation events is now $30,000
  • minimum participation numbers required for mass participation events is now 250 in regions and 500 in metro
  • assessment criteria have been given a weighting.

Bowls Australia LimitedNationals 2026The Nationals is an exciting combination of events which sees six national bowls events combined to create over a two week Festival of Bowls of predominately state vs state/territory competition. The event is extremely inclusive, with events for under 18s, over 60s, paras and opens. The event is taken to different regions every year, and in 2026 will be held in the City of Stirling with three local host clubs.$50,000
Bunbury Runners Club IncBunbury 3 Waters Running Festival 2026The Bunbury 3 Waters Running Festival is an all-inclusive running event showcasing the City of Bunbury.  The event is in its 44th year and will be held on the 12 April 2026. Floorball Association of Western AustraliaU19 Women 2025/26 Asia Oceania Floorball Confederation QualificationThis project involves hosting the U19 Women’s World Floorball Championship Qualifiers (WFCQ) in Perth, Western Australia in January 2026. This international tournament will determine which 3 national teams from the Asia Oceania region – Australia, New Zealand, Singapore or Japan – will qualify for the U19 Women’s World Floorball Championships (WFC) to be held in Italy in May 2026.$47,000

Mounts Bay Sailing Club will host the International Moth Class Association Australia National Titles and World Championships commencing in October 2026. Paddle Western Australia2026 Paddle Australia Canoe Sprint ChampionshipsThe 2026 Paddle Australia Canoe Sprint National Championships will be held in Perth at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre in March. This will be a full 5 days of racing for all age categories and boat categories including para canoe. This is a selection race for Australian Teams and being an Olympic discipline, the event must be held to the strictest protocols.

Shire of ChitteringChitty Chitty Run RunChitty Chitty Run Run is a two-day all abilities running event held at the Shire of Chittering's Bindoon Mountain Bike Park. The event offers a variety of courses to suit all abilities with wrap around entertainment including live music, market stalls, food trucks and overnight camping.$10,000
Shire of GnowangerupWild Gravel 2026The Wild Gravel event is an annual mass participation event in the Stirling Range region that aims to increase participation across Western Australia. Participants can walk, run or cycle distances as short as 5km and up to 150km through the stunning Koi Kyenunu-ruff.  The program engages local communities, builds volunteer and organisational capacity, and fosters partnerships with businesses, creating lasting benefits for regional health, recreation, and community connection.$30,000
Shire of Mt MarshallMt Marshall Gravel GrindThe Mt Marshall Gravel Grind is a new gravel cycling and running event set in the unique landscapes of the Shire of Mt Marshall. Offering multiple distances, including ultra, marathon, mid-range, short courses and relay options, the event caters to beginners through to elite endurance athletes. It activates the Wheatbelt during winter and encourages community participation, volunteering and regional visitation.$30,000
Shire of Murray2026 Dwellingup 100 & Mighty Jarrah Trail RunA hallmark event for the tiny town of Dwellingup, the C-Wise Dwellingup 100 and the Mighty Jarrah Trail Run bring almost 2000 people to town. With four mountain bike courses and three trail running distances, the event suits all ages and abilities, from beginners through to elite athletes.$30,000

The Series will build long-term outcomes by strengthening the regional riding culture, developing youth pathways, supporting volunteer capacity, and encouraging participants to return to explore the region’s trail networks.$30,000
West Australian Marathon Club IncRottnest Running FestivalThe 2026 edition of the Rottnest Running Festival will be the 32nd year this is being held. It includes distances from a marathon to a 300m kids dash.$30,000

Western Australian Diving Association IncSport and Recreation Events Funding ProgramDiving Western Australia’s Strategic Plan identifies international event attraction, pathway enhancement and sport development leading into Brisbane 2032. Developing a detailed strategic events plan for hosting the 2027 Pacific Junior Championships aligns with the organisation’s goal to bring international junior competitions to WA, strengthening performance pathways and increasing the profile of diving.$15,000
Western Australian Ice Skating Association IncAustralian Figure Skating Championships 2026The Australian Figure Skating Championships is the premier annual national competition organised by Ice Skating Australia together with WAISA, bringing together the country’s top skaters from across all states and territories. The event showcases elite performances in disciplines such as singles, pairs, ice dance, and synchronized skating across multiple levels including senior, junior, novice, and adult. The event determines Australia’s national champions and serves as a qualifier for international selection.$50,000
Western Australian Rugby Union Inc TA Rugby WAPerth 7's Rugby Union TournamentThe Perth 7's is a mass participation event aimed at engaging all parts of the community into rugby. Western Australian Water Ski Association IncNational Pro Wakeboard Tournament 2026The National Pro Wakeboard Tournament the main part of the Mandurah Action Sports Games which is a multi-action sports event. The National Pro Wakeboard tournament is sanctioned by Wakeboard Australia. Professional wakeboarders from around Australia and internationally will compete at the highest level, showcasing their skills and athleticism.$30,000
