The Albany Entertainment Centre is a much-loved entertainment venue hosting more than 100 events per annum within the Great Southern region.

To ensure the Albany Entertainment Centre continues to be the region’s premier performing arts centre, remediation works to the building’s exterior are required to address key safety, operational and maintenance issues.

Remediation works

Albany Entertainment Centre sits within a harsh ocean-front environment which has had a detrimental impact on the building, with strong winds and salt affecting roof panels and fixings.

The works will involve replacing the roof and external wall systems with a more durable anodised aluminium system, plus additional services to support safer and more efficient, ongoing maintenance (highlighted in blue below).

The project will begin in August 2026 and is expected to be completed in 2027. Works will be carried out 7 days a week.

Disruptions

No works are planned inside the Albany Entertainment Centre, so the VIEW Restaurant, events and shows will not be affected.

The contractor will work around the outside of the building to minimise disruption to the Albany Entertainment Centre’s operations and nearby businesses. However, there may be times when:

  • construction noise may be noticeable
  • parking availability may be temporarily reduced
  • entrances may be temporarily closed or redirected, but access will be maintained.

Any disruptions affecting patrons and nearby businesses will be communicated.

First call for expressions of interest to upgrade Albany Entertainment Centre

Oct 24, 2024, 16:06 PM by Andrea Prestini
Expressions of interest (EOI) are now open for a builder to progress the next stage of repair works to the iconic Albany Entertainment Centre.

The EOI is the first step in the main tender process to replace the roof and cladding, as well as installation of additional water and power services to allow for future maintenance.

The EOI closes 19 November 2024. The main tender process will commence in mid-January with works to begin in mid-2025.

Earlier this year, local Aboriginal company Colab Construction was appointed to complete urgent remediation works to the roof and façade due to the effects of the harsh ocean-front environment.

These repair works, along with the major tender works, will culminate in a $20 million upgrade to the Great Southern's stunning entertainment facility.

The upgrades are being funded by the Western Australian Government's Asset Maintenance Fund.

Project background

The Albany Entertainment Centre is located within the Albany Waterfront precinct, Princess Royal Harbour in the City of Albany. It includes a 620-seat auditorium, rehearsal space, restaurant, convention/corporate function area and an observation platform.

Following detailed engineering and building assessments, including climatic studies, a full replacement of the roof and façade cladding system was identified as the most effective long-term solution to enhance safety, building performance and ongoing maintenance.

The remediation works will improve ongoing maintenance and maximise the building’s longevity for current and future generations to enjoy.

The WA Government has committed $21.15 million towards this important investment in a much-loved venue ensuring it remains open as a key regional asset that supports arts, tourism and the local economy.
